In the United States alone, nearly one in five households brought home a new pet during the COVID-19 crisis, roughly 23 million homes. Globally, search interest in “dog adoption” and “cat adoption” peaked in April and May 2020, rising to 250% above the five-year average for those months.

India was very much a part of this story. The country’s pet population rose from roughly 26 million in 2019 to 32 million by 2024, with the pandemic widely credited as the inflexion point. Pet dogs alone went from about 19 million in 2018 to over 31 million within five years. Nestlé Purina’s South Asia business head has called COVID a “pivotal change” for pet ownership in India, one where the need for companionship took root and never really left.

That generation of pandemic pets is no longer a puppy or a kitten. It is entering, or about to enter, middle and senior life. This single fact is quietly reshaping two things at once: the commercial opportunity in senior pet care and a less comfortable trend running in parallel, rising abandonment.

The numbers behind the boom

The scale of pandemic-era adoption is well documented:

Nearly 23 million American households adopted a pet during COVID, according to ASPCA data.

Global search interest in pet adoption was statistically significantly higher in 2020 than the five-year average, with dog and cat adoption searches both showing this surge (Mann-Whitney U test, P = 0.001).

In India, 50% of pet owners report having relinquished a pet at some point since the pandemic began, a figure that should sit uncomfortably alongside the adoption growth story.

India’s pet care market is projected to be worth roughly INR 7,500 crore by the end of 2026, with the broader pet food market growing at a CAGR of 4.7% through 2027.

Roughly 600,000 pets were newly adopted in India in 2023 alone, the majority going to first-time pet parents.

This was never going to be a clean story. A surge of this size, driven largely by lockdown loneliness rather than considered planning, was always going to produce two simultaneous outcomes: a generation of pets now ageing into their senior years, and a meaningful share of owners unprepared for the long-term cost and commitment of pet parenthood.

Why senior pet care is the next big category

Pet life stage matters more than most brand strategies currently account for. A dog or cat adopted in the 2020-2021 window is now, on average, five to six years old. Depending on breed and species, many are entering the window where joint support, dental care, weight management, and cognitive health become relevant, not aspirational.

A few signals point to where this is heading:

Industry forecasts already classify “senior pets” as a distinct life-stage segment within the broader pet market, alongside puppies/kittens and adults, with mobility support and specialised nutrition called out as a specific growth driver.

In Europe, joint health supplements and senior pet nutrition are explicitly cited as driven by an ageing pet population, with veterinary spending and digital health records becoming part of the same conversation.

The global pet care services market, covering grooming, boarding, and wellness, including programmes for conditions such as arthritis, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, was valued at over 112 billion dollars in 2025 and is forecast to exceed 185 billion dollars by 2034.

Pet humanisation, the tendency to extend human healthcare standards to pets, is repeatedly cited by analysts as the structural driver behind this. Owners who once budgeted for puppy vaccinations are now budgeting for geriatric vet visits.

For a market like India, where pet ownership is still maturing and where calorific coverage from commercial pet food remains as low as 6 to 7% for dogs according to industry estimates, this represents genuine headroom. The senior segment in India is not yet saturated. It is barely served. Brands that build credible joint care, mobility, dental, and cognitive support lines are now positioning for a wave that is already on its way, not one that might arrive.

This is also where the commercial logic gets interesting for D2C wellness brands. Senior pet care is rarely an impulse purchase category. It is need-driven, recurring, and trust-dependent, the kind of category where a brand’s credibility and formulation transparency matter more than packaging or influencer reach. That is a very different game from the acquisition-led puppy-and-kitten products market.

The abandonment problem nobody wants in the same paragraph as “growth”

Here is the uncomfortable counterpoint. The same pandemic that drove adoption also planted the seeds for relinquishment, and the data on this has been inconsistent depending on geography.

In the United States, the popular narrative of pandemic pets being dumped en masse has been only partially supported by data. Shelter Animals Count found that owner-surrendered pets fell by nearly 23% between 2019 and 2021. But the picture worsened later: a 2022 Shelter Animals Count report found animal intakes rose 8% year on year; the Houston Humane Society reported a 50% jump in surrenders compared to pre-pandemic levels; and the RSPCA in the UK recorded a 24% increase in abandonments in 2022, largely tied to financial hardship.

A cross-country academic survey in the UK, US, Canada, Italy, Spain, and France found that about 4% of pet owners had considered giving up their pet, and under 1% had actually done so, with financial strain and COVID-related health concerns as the leading reasons. Tellingly, most people who gave up a pet did not take it to a shelter. They handed it to someone they knew, which means official shelter statistics likely understate the real scale of relinquishment.

India’s number is the one that should most directly concern brand owners and policymakers: 50% of pet owners surveyed admitted to relinquishing a pet since the start of the pandemic. Whatever the precise methodology behind that figure, it tells a clear story directionally. A market that added pets faster than it added pet-care infrastructure, veterinary access, and owner education was always going to generate a parallel wave of abandonment.

The reasons are consistent across markets:

Financial pressure, particularly the cost of food, grooming, and veterinary care, once the novelty wears off.

A return-to-office shift that removed the constant companionship arrangement many owners had built their routines around.

Behavioural issues that surface only once a puppy stops being a puppy, something more apparent during lockdowns and more inconvenient once life resumes.

A genuine gap in pet-care literacy among first-time, pandemic-era owners, many of whom adopted emotionally rather than with a full understanding of the multi-year commitment ahead.

Where this leaves brand strategy

For anyone building in pet wellness, three things follow from this data, not as soft ESG talking points but as commercial strategy.

First, the senior pet care category deserves dedicated product architecture now, not in three years. The pandemic cohort is ageing in real time. A brand that waits for the senior segment to become obviously large will be competing for shelf space and trust that earlier movers have already secured.

Second, abandonment is a brand risk as much as it is a welfare issue. Brands that built their early growth on the emotional, impulsive adoption wave have some responsibility in addressing what happens when that emotion fades and the bills start arriving. Education on lifetime cost, simplified subscription models for ongoing care, and partnerships with shelters and rescues are not just goodwill gestures; they are retention strategies, because an abandoned pet is a lost customer in the most literal sense.

Third, India’s pet care market is structurally underbuilt relative to its pet population. A market with 31 million-plus dogs and a fast-growing cat population, but with commercial pet food coverage still in single digits, has more headroom in senior nutrition, supplements, and preventive wellness than the current competitive set would suggest. The opportunity is real. So is the obligation that comes with having helped create the wave in the first place.

The pandemic gave the pet industry its fastest-ever adoption curve. What it does with the senior-care curve that follows, and how seriously it takes the abandonment curve running alongside it, will say more about the maturity of this category than any growth statistic on its own.

Bibliography

ASPCA pandemic pet adoption data, cited in The Woof, “The Impact of COVID-19 on Animal Shelters & Pet Abandonment Rates”: https://thewoof.org/animal-welfare/the-impact-of-covid-19-on-animal-shelters-amp-pet-abandonment-rates

Ho, J., Hussain, S., Sparagano, O.
